4. There were some 'issues' on the day. Bob was responsible for S1 having the same internal code as S3. If you had the "208 punched twice" message on your timing slip, you were credited with 206 as well.

The 10 transmitters had been marked with the transmitted codes MOE, MOI etc. Someone who was unfamiliar with morse had added the corresponding IDs (S1, S2 etc (probably at BC2025)). They made a mistake and wrote S4 on MOI, and S2 on MOH.
Unfortunately, this year's planner did not know any morse either and had to rely on the spider like additions instead of the actual TX IDs

Notes:
1. The computer results system which has been working for over 10 years now, decided to malfunction for reasons which are still unclear. The fault is intermittent and manifests itself in different ways leading to an inability of the computer to 'see' the SI download box.
2. Thanks are due to John M0OJM for producing his SI Droid app and tablet system to save the day.
3. David Williams was again the winner by very nearly 10 minutes. Congratulations to David.
4. Thanks are due to Dave G7WHI for setting the course and making very good use of the terrain available.

Day 3 - Bentley Woods - 2m Classic

Notes:
1. David Williams made it a hat trick of victories.
2. We are very grateful to the Merevale Estate for permission to use the superb terrain of Bentley Woods. A donation has been made to their chosen charity to show our gratitude.
3. The course offered some challenges. The 'far/near' trick was presented by TX2 being very loud from its positions high up near Ridge Lane and TX4 being in a re-entrant near the middle of the map being rather weak but only half as far away from the start
4. Optimum sequence (probably): TX5 then TX2, stay high for TX3, then cross the stream for TX1 and pick up TX4 on the way to the finish

5 As a final note, having the RSGB website 'down' for the whole of the week before the event and for the week after, made it difficult to get details to all those who intended to come. Many would use the RSGB site on the day or so before travelling to obtaim travel directions.

2. The league result had a number of possible winners prior to the event. David Williams was way up the table based on just two earlier events. With just one to add at Bagworth he came close but not quite close enough.

Notes:
1. This was the last event in the Region 3 series for 2025 and the weather has varied from the lovely sunny hot day at Haigh Hall CP to the pouring rain at Beacon CP this time.
2. David M3WDD, fresh back from his medal winning runs at the World Championships in Lithuania, showed us how it is done.
3. The two distinct parts to the area (the Country Park and the abandoned Golf Course) made it easier than usual to get the order right. This was 3, 1, then 5 on the CP before crossing to the Golf Course where did not much matter whether you chose 2, 4 or 4, 2.
4. The area proved to be good as Country Parks go with some nice stands of runnable woodland together with the inevitable areas of slow running.

Notes:
1. It was particularly good to see a new name at the top of the results and to welcome Max 2E0KVD again.
2. The course was very cleverly set and the hillside played a big part in determining the optimum sequence to visit the transmitters. TX 2 was the obvious choice of first transmitter to visit
a. because its location was obvious from the start given the bearing and the minimum distance between the start and the first transmitter.
b. because it created as long a baseline as possible at one end of a long thin area. A bearing on TX5 from the start and another from the vicinity of TX2 fixed TX5 close to the first of the two farm houses on the map.
The climb from the start to TX2 was 220 ft but descending the steps to get round the southerly oob area lost 170 feet. It was then a climb from 50 feet above the start here to the 300 feet above the start of TX3 - a climb of 250 feet giving a minimum overall climb of 470 feet.
The key decision was to 'take' the two intermediate level transmitters, one after the other; that is TX5 followed by TX1. Then the climb to TX3 finishing with TX4.
In summary the best sequence was 2,5,1,3,4
The final factor was the map drawn with winter vegetation when much of the enclosed rough open area between the farm houses was chest high bracken and definitely fight.
3. We were visited by the head ranger Nigel Turner whose late father held a G8 amateur radio licence

Notes:
1. In spite of the worst that storm Ashley could do, eleven starters enjoyed a rather damp Chiltern Wood where one could move in any direction without too much impediment. Most of the participants lost contact with the map as they took straight line routes from one transmitter to the next
2. Robin RS213497, who was the planner for the TVOC orienteering running at the same time, did us proud with a course that used the wood to the best advantage yet gave a real challenge to choose the best sequence of transmitters. This was 1-3-5-2-4 or the reverse.
3. Also, playing a key role, was David M3WDD who sorted out start times, maps and the money at very short notice.
4. The event was the last of the four events in the Region 10 league for 2024. Jillian M0JIN was the winner having attended all four events (with the best 3 to count, she gave up her score in Event 1 and counted events 2,3 and 4). Runner up with a margin of just one point was David Deane G3ZOI.

1. Many of the regular participants were unable to attend this one. They missed a new and surprisingly challenging area with many unusual features. John M0OJM was the planner and his clever course caused many to be caught out. For example Bob T was close enough to run down TX 4 during its 60 seconds on the air but there was an uncrossable hedge in the way. Similiarly John Renshaw was close to TX 2 but his path was blocked by the uncrossable stream. As if this was not enough, three competitors were enticed into taking TXs 2 and 3 in the wrong order.

The optimum sequence was 2 then 3, come back from 3 alongside the motorway to ascertain 1 was on the far side. Cross the bridge to get 4, 5 and finally 1.
6. Everyone seemed to deal with the problem of the transmitter placed close to the motorway. If you got this wrong and had to return to the other side to get to it, it added an awful lot to your time.
7. The next event is at Bagworth on 17th September with an 80m course in the morning and a 2m event in the afternoon.

5. To help those who struggled a bit dealing with the areas of impenetrable bramble and nettles, there is a 'blow by blow' account by one competitor below these notes. This account describes the technique of sticking to the path or ride for as long as possible and, when the wanted transmitter is sending, to run along the ride whilst closely monitoring the direction of the receiver null for signs that is starting to swing to one side or the other as you pass the transmitter.
7. The next event in the series will be on a Saturday. This is 12th August at Martinshaw Woods near Markfield with Bob G3ORY setting the course.

'Blow by blow' account
Leave the start. TX1 and TX2 are in pretty much the same direction straight ahead down the track (heading south west). TX1 is loudest, so I conclude TX1 is closer than TX2.
TX3 comes up to the left and is therefore confined by the A42 trunk road. This forest block is probably not big enough to have more than one transmitter in it,
TX4 and TX5 are much weaker and way to the right. TX 5 must be beyond the lake in the corner of the woods nearest to Donisthorpe while TX4 is close to Willesley Woodside near the Ashby - Donisthorpe road.
My game plan is now fixed. Get TX3 then TX1 followed by TX2 and then TX 5 and finally TX4.
I am lucky with TX 3 when I am on the track and close when it shuts down. I keep on the same bearing, enter the woods and almost immediately rewarded by sighting the banner.
On now to TX1. Things start to drop apart after three more transmissions I am still not sure of its location. I am on a ride heading south west. TX1 shuts down and TX2 starts - it is LOUD. Even more significant it is behind me. I have fallen for the 'near/far trick'. This is when a transmitter further away sounds louder than on nearer to the start. I turn round and head back eastwards along the ride to the surprise of John and the three lads who were coming up behind me.
I get TX 2 on its next transmission by standing on a track close to where I think it might be. When it fires up I head into the trees and very soon spot the banner.
Now looking for TX1. It is transmitting as I am at the spot on the north east/south west track where I turned round to get TX2. I come out onto the wide north west/south east ride with the power line and head down hill towards the lake. Rocking the receiver from side to side all the time looking for signs of the bearing changing. It starts to turn to the right. When the TX shuts down I am close to the bottom of the ride and the beaing is about 45 degrees right. I plunge into the trees and have to negotiate piles of logs from thinned trees. I spot the flag and get to it minus map and control card. 'Oh bother' or words to that effect. Back over the log piles to retrieve map and control card and finally punch at TX1.
From there I follow the path around the lake to be close to the point where my earlier bearing on TX5 crosses. I have a bit of time in hand and take a bearing on TX4 which is a good cross bearing on the one I got at the start. TX4 is closer to the point where the stream crossed Willesley Woodside than it is to the Ashby - Donisthorpe road.
TX5 fires up and I head northwards up the hill alongside the wood and in the open area. Again the bearing starts to turn but to the left this time. The TX shuts down before I have a 90 degree bearing between the path and the direction of my null on the receiver. I guess how much further up the slope it must be, then turn into the trees and am rewarded by spotting a banner. Joy quickly turnes to frustration when I find no punch or lock on the banner. After going out and then coming in again on the next transmission in the 5 minute cycle, I am back at the same spot. I am joined by John and his lads, then Rob arrives followed by David G6HGE. One of the lads (William?) spots the punch on the ground about 6 metres from the flag. I am able to punch and leave quickly. I miss the possibility of the diagonal run down to the lakeside path and go back to the path directly downhill. As I totter along the path David G6HGE overtakes me and disappears out of sight. I get to the gate on Willesly Woodside just as TX4 fires up, I am in the ideal spot to decide if it is the far side of the lane or not. It is the Donisthorpe side where I am standing. I head up the ride in the closest direcction to the bearing on the TX and again keep rocking the receiver from side to side looking for signs of the signal null swinging to one side or the other. It swings to the right and when it is at right angles to the ride, I turn into the trees and the flag is directly in front of me..
After that is is head for the finish at the best speed I can manage which is not very fast

Notes:
1. The heatwave did not prove to be as debilitating as might have been expected. The shade of the trees combined with a gentle breeze to keep the particiapnts from over heating.
2. The 80m course was shorter than usual (on account of the forecast temperatures). It posed problems with TX3 being close to the A42 and the need to decide on which side of this dual carriageway it lay.
3. The 2m course took competitors into the woods beside the Golf Course. The map of this area did not do justice to the 'jungle' of brambles in a large part of the area.
